Laboratoire Kastler Brossel :

Unité mixte de recherche de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, de Sorbonne Université, du Collège de France et du Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), le Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB) est l’un des acteurs majeurs dans le domaine de la physique quantique. IIl couvre de nombreux sujets allant des tests fondamentaux de la physique quantique jusqu’à leurs applications. Son expertise est reconnue internationalement comme en témoignent ses trois prix Nobel obtenus au long de ses 65 ans d’histoire.

Description de la mission

Technological advancements over the last quarter-century have led to interferometric
experiments reaching the quantum radiation-pressure noise (QRPN) limit. Combined with
quantum phase noise, QRPN results in a limit to displacement sensitivity that one can achieve
with a coherent laser beam: the standard quantum limit (SQL). Such a limit has recently been
achieved in table-top experiments and will soon be as well in large-scale gravitational-wave
interferometers, such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virg. The SQL can however be
beaten using quantum squeezed states of light.
The goal of this project is to develop the hardware to experimentally demonstrate
measurements below the SQL with micromechanical resonators (microwheel,
micromembrane…). The squeezed light source is made of an OPO combined with a filter
cavity, that creates frequency-dependent squeezing. The source is used to probe the
displacement of a micromechanical resonator, which is embedded inside a dilution fridge
below 100 mK and laser-cooled close to its quantum ground state. The intern will participate
in all aspects of the experiments and will develop skills in many relevant fields: optics,
cryogenics, electronics, digital feedback loops, low-noise measurements…
The Optomechanics and Quantum Measurements group at Laboratoire Kastler Brossel is one
of the very few optomechanics experimental groups with connections to both macroscopic
resonators (within the Virgo Collaboration) and microresonators (with table-top experiments
at LKB). It has a unique expertise to perform such a project: microfabrication, quantumlimited
laser sources, low-noise electronics, dilution cryogenics These projects are in
collaboration with several groups inside the Virgo Collaboration and the Australian National
University.
