Description de la mission

OVD-SaaS is a new platform under development to run reproducible algorithms on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with industrial applications. This platform will put state-of-the-art algorithms developed by academics to the reach of industrial partners, in a tight and fruitful collaboration. Specifically, we intend that the services of OVD-SaaS are useful for the economical development of the companies in the Ile-de-France region.

OVD-SaaS does not start from scratch, but from the existing platform of IPOL, a journal on reproducible algorithms. OVD-SaaS can be then seen as the natural extension of IPOL to machine-learning (ML) applications. Among the several projects that OVD-SaaS will offer, we want to exploit ML techniques to improve the existing IPOL archive. Indeed, at this moment each IPOL demo has a separate archive which only consists on a list of experiments with the inputs, parameters, and outputs. But without any doubt, there is a big opportunity to exploit the large amount of data in the IPOL archives to better organize it.

This project is about using ML techniques such as the Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), and classic image-analysis methods, among many others, to add a new layer of organization in the archive. For example, given an image, it could tell which other images are similar (say, the 10 more similar), or it could classify them in clusters (that could using fixed labels, or be automatically determined from the data).

This internship is mainly on the scientific aspects of the ML techniques that allow to solve these problems. Making an OVD-SaaS application using these techniques is out of the scope of this internship, and it is proposed in a different one. Both students will collaborate, one on the ML methods, and the other on building the application.

The intern is expected to know or learn the basics of linear algebra, ML algorithms for classification, dimension reduction (with NMF, PCA, ICA, ...), descriptors for image comparison (SIFT method, NMF clustering, and others), and programming in Python 3.

Profil recherché

The candidate will work on the mathematics of algorithms on Machine Learning for Image Classification. The intern is expected to know or learn the basics of linear algebra, ML algorithms for classification, dimension reduction (with NMF, PCA, ICA, ...), descriptors for image comparison (SIFT method, NMF clustering, and others), and programming in Python 3.
