A new investigation by Joe Berlinger is presented at the festival. In Black Tide: Voices From the Gulf, the American documentary filmmaker reports the consequences of the oil rig explosion in 2010 in Louisiana.
Chevron won against me, as I had to turn my Crude footage over. It is extremely disappointing. It is also a growing bias in our country: the right of corporations is stronger than the right of individuals. It was depressing and cost me a lot of money. Eventually, I wondered whether or not it is effective to make this kind of movies. But I don't want to stop reporting. You just have to carry on and not worry about the consequences.
We started filming in June 2010. The world's media and news reporters were leaving the place at that time, saying everything was fine. The US government, BP officials and people promoting tourism in Louisiana were saying everything was fine. But I didn't believe everything was fine and wasn't afraid to examine both sides of the story accurately. My name was already associated with another oil company. I thought that as soon as BP would hear it, they wouldn't give me access to them. But they did, they wanted their side of the story to be told. And some other people in Louisiana were also afraid of talking because of the consequences that could have happened to them.
It was played on television and the people who saw it were very happy with it, expecially in Louisiana. They were happy to see someone sticking around while everybody had left. I’m glad when my movies have this impact, as I am into long-term impacts of pollution on human beings and on the food chain (fishing is an important activity in the Gulf).
It was wonderful in 2009 and I was really pleased to win a prize, for this kind of film is difficult to male. Festivals like the Fife are important because they show hope, bring about change and show the power of documentaries. After my most recent film, Paradise los 3: Purgatory, three people came out of prison. I've been nominated for an oscar and will attend the ceremony in Los Angeles at the end of February. Such a positive impact, and seeing that people like my work make me feel good, all the more as 2011 was a big year for me.
